Population

The total population is 4,857,218 (on  2016), with an average density of 90 inhabitants per km².

Just like the whole American continent was also the area originally inhabited by different tribes, but they are, however, in the minority now. currently live in Costa Rica currently around 60,000 Indians, only 1.5% of the total population, divided into eight groups: Maleku, Chorotega, Cabecar, Huetar, Bribri, Teribe, Boruca and Guaymí. Most Indians live in sanctuaries in remote areas, mainly in the Talamanca Mountains and the Nicoya peninsula.

Along the Caribbean coast, most inhabitants of African origin, descendants of slaves who were imported in the 17th century for the cultivation of cocoa, or Jamaicans who were here in the late 19th century brought the construction of the Atlantic railroad. When that project were also quite a few Chinese and also involved their descendants still live in the Caribbean.

Over 80% of Costa Ricans, however, mestizo, mixed European and Indian blood, albeit often with predominantly Spanish influence. On that mestizos, there is a lot of variation in terms of skin color. Some Costa Ricans are whiter than a European, and other dark as an African.

Costa Ricans call themselves Ticos and Ticas, a friendly and hospitable nation that prides itself on its democratic and peace-loving tradition of his homeland.
